We raised over $15,400 at this kickoff.
A cadre of 30 or more MRNA volunteers, the staff of the Moretown
Elementary school and the Howe's family and friends joined together
put on a barn-burner of a party. The pig roast was attended by more
than 400 people! They ate all the delicious food -- and we do mean
all of it! They danced to the great music of the Dave Keller band
(who donated their appearance). They jumped on the Bouncy-House provided
by Valley Rent-all. They told their stories to a Harwood Union class
that was documenting the flood for the community. And, best of all,
they spent a great afternoon together in support of their community.
People happily paid their admission to eat cole slaw and mac and
cheese long after the fantastic spit-roasted Howe's farm pork was
gone. Some handed us $100 bills for admission and said "Keep
the change, it's for the community." A few handed us checks
for much, much more. One of the most memorable donations was when
a young fellow about eleven or twelve years old walked up with a
couple of his friends and asked if we were taking donations. On hearing"Yes",
he reached in to his pocket and gave us about sixty cents
or so in change to put in the cash box.
It was a glorious time, and perhaps the beginning of an annual
community gathering. Last spring, we asked for input on what people
would like
MRNA to do in the future to fulfill its mission of supporting and
protecting the quality of life in our community. The number one idea
was to create and produce an annual event in support of the community.
What an inaugural event this first pig roast made. So much so that
the MRNA Board assessed itself $50 each to create a start-up fund
for planning next year's event. Principal Duane says the school is
game. Our first order of business will be to discuss how to use the "piggy
bank" with Duane and Eric Howes.
Thanks to all who volunteered and all who attended. It was a wonderful
day! Hope to see you next year!

Dr. Helen Caldicott is the single most articulate
and passionate advocate of citizen action to remedy the nuclear
and environmental crises. Dr. Caldicott has devoted the last 38
years to an international campaign to educate the public about
the medical hazards of the nuclear age and the changes necessary
in human behavior to stop environmental destruction.
Co-founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility, Dr Caldicott
has received many prizes and awards for her work, 20 honorary
doctoral degrees, and was personally nominated for the Nobel
Peace Prize by Linus Pauling - himself a Nobel Laureate. The
Smithsonian Institute has named Dr Caldicott as one of the most
influential women of the 20th Century.

Dr. Caldicott’s visit to Vermont is timely as our state grapples
with the health and environmental impacts of tritium leaks at the
Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant in Vernon.
“ When I heard Dr. Caldicott speak, in Ira Allen Chapel
years ago, you could hear a pin drop
in the crowded auditorium. Her message is as compelling and relevant
now as it was then.
I was left with the realization that it is up to us to prevent the unthinkable:
nuclear disaster
whether from war or power plant. This trumps all for the survival of
our planet.”
Deb Van Dyke, NP, of Green Mountain Global Forum and Doctor’s Without
Borders
Dr. Caldicott’s Vermont tour is supported by Green Mountain
Global Forum; VNRC; VPIRG; Edmundite Center for Peace and Justice
at St. Michael’s College; Sierra Club; and Big Picture Theater.
